Please join us at the Museum of Contemporary Art Toronto, first floor, for the launch of C Magazine issue 141 “Graphic Design” and the 15th Annual C Magazine Contemporary Art Auction Gattuso Edition by Vanessa Maltese.

Issue 141 of C Magazine is devoted to “Graphic Design” as a visual practice that shapes ways of knowing—its ability to obfuscate and renegotiate existing scriptural economies of power. Featuring a dialog between Dr. Winona Wheeler and Joi T. Arcand on the Cree Syllabary; Kalpana Subramanian on the history of the National Institute of Design in Ahmedabad; Chris Hamamoto and Federico Pérez Villoro on magic and techno-capitalism; Mary Banas on Shannon Finnegan and her use of typography to articulate disability and access; Tings Chak on the history of OSPAAAL and Tricontinental Magazine; Tucker McLachlan on incidental graphics; David Schnitman reading Pierre Bourdieu into contemporary design cultures; with an Artist Project by Danielle Aubert and Kikko Paradella introduced by Lisa Gitelman. Serendipitously, this issue also ushers in a complete redesign by Raf Rennie.

Pet rock
2019
Patinated bronze,
lacquer, enamel paint
Edition of 55 unique pieces + 1AP

Pet rock is a hand-patinated and painted bronze sculpture cast from a found stone. Bearing an uncanny resemblance to a face with two eyes and a furrowed brow, “Pet Rock” explores the psychological phenomenon of pareidolia, in which recognizable patterns are seen in random visual material. This project is generously supported by La Fondation Emmanuelle Gattuso. Vanessa will be in attendance.

Vanessa Maltese is a multidisciplinary artist based in Toronto. Her practice explores ambiguous figure-ground relationships, optical illusions and processes of pattern recognition. Maltese holds a BFA from OCAD University, and was the National Winner of the 2012 RBC Canadian Painting Competition, and the 2018 recipient of the Glenfiddich Artists in Residence Program Prize. Recent and notable exhibitions include, Night Gallery (Los Angeles), Shane Campbell Gallery (Chicago), Nicelle Beauchene Gallery (New York), Greenpoint Terminal Gallery (Brooklyn), Halsey Mckay (East Hampton), The Power Plant (Toronto), and COOPER COLE (Toronto). vanessamaltese.com
